This Saturday, visiting Buddhist Order member Dharmasara from Berlin and Aryapala (Australia), will take you through a mindfulness and awareness meditation.

Last Saturday he looked at how meditation is a balance between focus and breadth.

In order to create a mind which is in harmony with itself, we need both be receptive to whatever experiences arise (breadth), as well as take up a focus for our mind, like the breath, which helps us anchor our experience and integrate our experience around. This way, the mind can become both full of energy as well as calm down.

And then what?!

To have a mind at ease sounds already pretty good, even though these meditation experiences are all very lovely and good, they also don’t stay forever. They tend to come and go and unless we are staying in retreat forever, it is very difficult to maintain them.

So Buddhism teaches that to get to a calm mind is only the first step. The ultimate goal of Buddhism is, after all, not peace of mind, but attaining wisdom.

Because there is so much more to come after the calm of meditation…
